Aarunya English Training Classes on Phonics

May 18, 2024

The Aarunya Foundation conducted teacher training programme on the topic English Phonics from 18th to 26th May, 2024 at Ashirvad in Bangalore. Three of our staff members Mrs Annapurna, Mrs. Savithri and Ms. Arogya attended the training. Approximately 36 staff members from various parts of Karnataka participated in the training. It was a wonderful opportunity for lower class teachers to learn effective methods for teaching phonics and alphabet recognition.

During the training, participants were taught how to implement phonics instruction using lesson plans and methodology. The first two days were focused on teaching phonics, capital letters, and writing, with many interactive activities. Afterwhich the participants were divided into eight groups, each tasked with teaching specific letters and phonics to their peers.

The lesson plan included components such as introduction, flashcards, sounding exercises, introduction of letter occurrences, songs, story reading, word banks, blending words, sentence reading, letter formation, dictation, dictation in four-line books, and preparation for teaching demonstrations.

After the teaching demonstration, feedback was provided by the trainers, both collectively and individually, to address mistakes and areas for improvement. Subsequent sessions covered phonics pre and post-assessment methods to evaluate student learning.

Participants were given assessment sheets to analyze students' phonics and reading abilities, categorizing their performance as E (Excellent), G (Good), S (Satisfactory), or NI (Needs Improvement).

Overall, the training provided a unique and enriching experience, allowing participants to meet new people and gain confidence in teaching phonics to students. Special thanks to the Aarunya team, Sister Juliet headmistress, and Father Cyril Raj director for their support and guidance throughout the training.
